I’d like to add more buttons to my application, so that the top bar looks more like the right part of this navigation bar:

the short answer is: developers can add their own buttons into an application built with Five almost anywhere where it makes sense: in the top navigation bar; in the center navigation, or straight into a form. These buttons can be icons, or text (calls-to-action).
